Second Structured Early Industry Exposure Program (SEIEP) experience in Plexus Manufacturing Sdn. Bhd.(Riverside), Penang Lee Soon Poh, 2017
It was a pack and busy period for me as a student who having Final Year Project (FYP) to be completed. After some persuasion from faculty personnel and discussion with my FYP supervisor, I made my mind to join SEIEP again during my interval long break between year 3 and final year. In this second SEIEP attachment of my life, I had extended my attachment to my previous SEIEP industry from last year 9 weeks to 12 weeks with dated from 12 June 2017 to 1 Sept 2017. This time, I moved from seaside branch to riverside headquarter and Supplier Quality Engineering (SQE) team to Quality Assurance Engineering team. During this attachment, I worked as trainee under supervision by head of section in QA team, Mr. Edmund Tan.
In this second attachment, my task is far more challenged compare to last year. This also match with the initial planning of the execution of SEIEP program. Instead of expose to industry environment and hands-on basic task as an employee, I would need to assist in the team to find solution for the quality issue raised and ensure the quality of the products with my supervisor. Furthermore, there will be a quality improvement project that I need to complete before I end my attachment in Plexus.
QA team in Plexus basically is a team dealing with quality from the raw material to the product that shipped. QA team should know all the processes in manufacture the raw material to customer desired products to tackle the quality issue when raised. It is my pleasure that I meet my supervisor who willing to trained me to be a future engineer. He guides me on understanding all stations in Surface Mounting Technology (SMT) process and backend process. He also shares his experience on dealing quality issue and even bring me to the production floor to solve the problem on the floor. Besides this, as a trainee, my routine task will be preparing quality related documents such as solder paste height data list to ensure the capability of the process through process capability index (Cpk), First Article report to send for customer to review on their products built, Assembly Build Instruction (ABI) as a guideline for QA operator in production floor, monthly pareto charts on defects and more. In addition, I worked on myself learning plan in this attachment by reading all the useful training material provided by Plexus on Lean Sigma, Problem Solving Skills and many more. For my quality improvement project, I done it by proposing kaizen for QA team with the intention to use visual basic for application (VBA) programming or called as macro in saving the time of engineer on preparing pareto charts and sorting raw data. I glad to have the opportunity to learn programming coding, hands-on to prepare the macro and even generate the macro for the long-term use in the team.
This SEIEP attachment provide connections from subjects learned in university. It let me expose to the application of the knowledge we learned in Laboratory Quality Management, QA & QC for Laboratory and Business Organization Skill subjects. I wish to have these application skills on the knowledge learned and soft skills implementation even in class through assignments after this attachment. It will be a good impression and add on credits if a student knows where and how to apply the knowledge in industry practice even before entering the industry.
Last but not least, I would like to thank Assistant Vice-Chancellor Industry Partnership & Community Relation Department also as former Dean of Faculty of Industrial Sciences and Technology(FIST), Prof. Dr. Jamil bin Ismail to initiate this SEIEP program, current Dean of FIST, Associate Prof. Dr. Mohd Hasbi AB Rahim, my FYP supervisor also as Deputy Dean of FIST, Associate Prof. Dr. Chong Kwok Feng and SEIEP coordinator, Dr. Jaya Vejayan for giving me this opportunity of joining SEIEP. I also thank and appreciate the guidance given by my my industrial supervisor, Mr. Edmund Tan and all the engineers of QA team during my attachment. It is my honor to be the second batch of SEIEP and help in sustaining this program. I will strongly recommend all students in FIST to join this SEIEP as it is beneficial.

STRUCTURED EARLY INDUSTRIAL EXPOSURE PROGRAM (SEIEP) EXPERIENCES-
AT ACUMEN SCIENTIFIC SDN BHD - 2017
MUHAMMAD AKMAL BIN YUSOFF (SB15053)
It has been a great experience to be given the opportunity to pursue Structured Early Internship Exposure Program (SEIEP) organized by Faculty of Industrial Science & Technology, University Malaysia Pahang for the 2nd time. It is also an honor to be part of Acumen Scientific Sdn Bhd as it is considered a top company in providing analytical testing & consultancy services in the field of chemistry, microbiology, physical etc. Through SEIEP I have gained many new knowledge and exposure that will help me for my future. This program makes me more confident of myself in facing the industry. Comparing from the first time experience at the company, I had become more confidence in handling given task. Besides, the company had given trust to let me run analysis of sample on my own. The program starts from 3rd July 2017 to 30th August 2017 under 3 department which Customer Services Department, Microbiological Laboratory Department and Chemical Laboratory Department (Schedule Waste).
For the customer services department, I had handle the registration of sample sent by other company for testing. All sample have their own log code and I required to register the sample and distribute the sample to related laboratory for analysis. Besides, sometimes for the sample which unable to proceed by the Acumen (Penang) Lab, which may due to lack of instrument, time or labor, I need to send the sample to other lab for the analysis.
After a few periods, I had worked under Microbiology Laboratory Department. During the periods, I had conducted a few analyses related to microbiological testing such as detecting E. coli, coliform, yeasts, molds, salmonella, total plate count, V. cholerae, V. parahaemolyticus and S. aureus. The routine during in the lab is every morning we need to keep the lab clean by sweeping and moping the floor and throw away all the rubbish and waste from autoclave machine. Then followed by applying aseptic technique before starting sample analysis. There are 4 main job scope in the lab which media preparation, sampling, sample analysis and key-in result into system.
Then, under Chemical Laboratory Department, I had been instructed to carry out analysis on schedule waste for sulphide test, specific gravity test, pH meter reading and flash point test. During in the department, they had given me an opportunity to handle advance instrument, ‘GD-261A Automatic PMCC Flash Point Tester’ which used for flash point test.
Last but not least, I want to give my gratitude to FIST, UMP on a whole and specifically to my supervisors at A and FIST. Also to all those helped me to completed this SEIE program. I hope that more student will involve in this program as many benefit can be obtained especially hands-on experience due to the SEIE program.
