REPORT 4

GLOBAL CLASSROOM BETWEEN FACULTY OF INDUSTRIAL SCIENCES AND TECHNOLOGY (FIST), UNIVERSITI MALAYSIA PAHANG (UMP) AND DEPARTMENT OF FOOD SCIENCE, FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF MINAS GERAIS (UFMG), BRAZIL.

 The Global Classroom initiative led by Dr. Nor Adila Mhd Omar (FIST, UMP) with Dr. Gabriel Barbosa de Oliveira from Department of Food Science, UFMG on 16 April 2021 has involved three courses from Industrial Biotechnology Programme; BSB 3583 Advanced Enzyme Technology, BSB 4173 Extraction and Bioseparation, and BSB 3123 Bioprocess Technology. This initiative is to expose and experienced the students in a new interactive way of communicating through an online platform with international entities. The course coordinators of BSB 4173, Dr. Nazira Mahmud, and BSB 3123, Dr. Mohd Fazli Farida Asras, have also participated in this session.                               

Sharing the culture about Brazil as an introduction has caught great attention, created an excellent engagement and fun time between students and guest lecturer; Dr. Oliveira throughout the session. Dr. Oliveira has given a fascinating talk on “Pectinases: Enzyme-assisted Extraction of Biocompounds” with the outcome for the students to be able to explain the roles of pectinase in the extraction of biocompounds, the potential mechanism of pectinolytic enzymes (pectinases) as well as to discuss the application of pectinases in industry. The session has received encouraging feedback from undergraduate students. 

At the end of the session, Dr. Oliveira has conducted an exciting learning activity such as quizzes with interactive to assess the knowledge and understanding of the students. Moreover, this initiative may also develop a research interest, improve communication skills and self-confidence, and expose the students to international and multicultural experiences. In sum, this global classroom is a way to deepen students’ knowledge, experience, and global outlook, thus, may increase their human capital.

REPORT 3

GLOBAL CLASSROOM 2.0 @FIST TRANSCENDS TECHNOLOGY AND CULTURE

Global Classroom 2.0 (GC 2.0) is a digital platform that enables academician and students from multiple institution to work together using synchronous and asynchronous modes simultaneously to achieve common goals set by the coordinator of a shared course. Prof. Dr. Keiko Ikeda and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Masato Ueda from Kansai University (KU) has initiated a collaborative five-week GC 2.0 session with the Faculty of Industrial Sciences and Technology (FIST) through Advance Materials Laboratory course (BSP3452) which coordinated by Dr. Saifful Kamaluddin Muzakir. 28 third year Material Technology (FIST) students and 10 KU students have been exposed to the collaborative works which inclusive of discussions and brainstorming on

(i) partially guided research works,

(ii) contributions to the world using earned knowledge and experience, and

(iii) similarities and differences between the two organizations.

The students presented the output during the 2-hour final seminar on 11 June 2021; which concluded that technologies could be manipulated to catalyze a collaboration which enables multiple institutions with different background, history, culture, language and level of technologies to work in a fast pace to solve identified problems. The common tools that have been used in this collaboration are e.g., (i) padlet, and (ii) Microsoft Zoom. The report from KU could be accessed via the following links.

REPORT 1

GLOBAL CLASSROOM WITH LA TROBE UNIVERSITY, AUSTRALIA: COLLABORATIVE LEARNING TO ENGAGE STUDENTS OF BSK1133 PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY

In line with the Centre for Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) initiative to connect students and academics from different countries, global classroom between FIST, UMP and La Trobe University, Australia were conducted. Ts. Dr. Yuen Mei Lian, the course coordinator of BSK1133 Physical Chemistry, invited Associate Professor Dr. Ing Kong (School of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences, La Trobe University, Australia) as the guest lecturer for the global classroom session from September 2019 to October 2019 (6 weeks).

A total of 30 students were engaged in the global classroom session. Besides effective lecturing by Associate Professor Dr. Ing Kong, employing fun learning activities and quizzes are very important for student engagement in this online learning. It is not only students' knowledge will improve, but also their interest, strength, active, communication, team spirit and freedom of expression will increase as well.

Finally, Associate Professor Dr. Ing Kong shared some Australia’s culture and students’ life in La Trobe University, Australia. Students were very excited about learning in this global classroom session. 

REPORT 2

FIST DELEGATES DEMONSTRATE GLOBAL CLASSROOM AT KANSAI UNIVERSITY – DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION (KU-DX) PRESS RELEASE

Global Classroom is an online-based learning platform which used for sharing resources, ideas and expertise. The core activities are mainly focusing on building strong network between the participating institutions. The discussions among the parties involved, transcended the technological and cultural point of view, and finding ways to leverage them for a global betterment.

The Faculty of Industrial Sciences and Technology, Universiti Malaysia Pahang has established a collaboration with Kansai University, Japan through five-week Global Classroom sessions (14 May to 11 June 2021). The classroom activities have been demonstrated by two senior lecturers (Dr. Saifful Kamaluddin Muzakir and Ts. Dr. Muhammad Hafiz Mazwir) and two students (Nurhuda Fatinah Abdul Samad and Rihashni Tivagaran) during the Kansai University – Digital Transformation (KU-DX) press release on 30th June 2021. Among the presenting parties are universities from Hawaii, Taiwan and Philippines.

The collaboration has successfully expanding the learning environment beyond the physical function of a classroom, and adapting to a new norm of working environment. The platform could offer our youths to share experiences and contribute original solutions from the sources that could have been overshadowed during in-person and face-to-face learning methods. The integration of digital learning tools such as padlet and Google Suite able to record ideas efficiently through notes and videos posted by participants, therefore creating environment conducive to active participation. These activities would also inspire and support our young generation to stay positive during the recovery phase of the global pandemic within their communities.

We have a dream. We dream for an education system that enables students and academicians to work as a global community that shares resources, technologies and expertise leveraging the virtual reality and augmented reality technologies. The initiatives that we have demonstrated today could be our first step towards the realization of the dream.
